Martian Saints
Martian Saints
Less slick than her major-label debut Got No Shadow, this second of the former Boston subway busker’s independent EPs really shows why she caused a buzz-bin clamor, and offers an early glimpse of not only Lord’s wondrous voice but the songwriting talent of Elliott Smith. Lord’s voice is crystalline-pure, communicating more emotion with a shiver or sigh than lesser Lilith-types do with a shriek. Her “Salem ’76″ is a sparkling acoustic gem about going home again, while Smith’s “I Figured You Out” shows her again to be a master interpreter, finding sadness and resignation where others might see only anger. She’s also a master scavenger, selecting covers from fine singer/songwriters, this time Bevis Frond and Pete Droge. David Daley

I Figured You Out,
‘I Figured You Out’ written and played by Elliott Smith may be one of Elliott’s best ever. And with Mary Lou’s breathy vocals, the song is pure honey. I’d recommend this EP on the basis of this one track.

Just agreeing,
you’ve never heard of heartache until you really hear -i figured you out- which is done wonderfully here. damn fine work, but probably not the song for the party album.

great EP!,
I’ve never seen/heard Mary Lou Lord play live, but this is the next best thing – a small collection of covers, with one original, that is fresh and fantastic. The excellent depth shown by her choices of covers (Bevis Frond, Peter Laughner, etc) make for a great EP.
